. DXing CQ DX
DX is Fun !
last update = July 2023
I never met a pile-up I didn't like !My very first DX contact was with KP4GN when I was a novice with a home-built 1 tube crystal-controlled. transmitter. That was April, 30 1953, so I guess that is when I got the DX bug. I noticed that Juan is still an active ham. I only had one crystal, and it was 3.731 MHz. Around 1965 I started experimenting with transistorized c.w. transmitters. I wanted to try some DXing with low power. I remember that I couldn't find any transistor on the market at the time that would go to 10 meters, and even 15 was a problem. I did however find that I could get about 5 watts on 20 meters with a 2N3632. The transmitter design used a 2N706 oscillator, 2N697 driver, and a 2N3632 Final. I was very surprised when recently I found my schematic on the Internet in an old issue of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Amateur Radio Club Newsletter at:

Take a look !
Here is the "OCE" MiniRig
It worked 148 Countries on 20 meter CW
and
1st QRPp "WAZ" (May 15, 1971 Award# 3180)
Due to the angle of the photo, the 20 meter beam may appear smaller than it's actual size !!
My Current DX Totals are:
My QRP - 5 Watts total : 333 worked (honor roll status)(333 confirmed) +14 deleted for 347 Total
My QRPp - 1 Watt total : 265 worked and confirmed + 1 watt WAZ completed on 10 March 2014.
My QRP/QRO total : all 340 entities worked and confirmed + 24 deleted for 364 Total.
Other DX Accomplishments:
1st QRPp WAZ - CQ Magazine - 1971
QRPp Distance Record working ZL2AFZ running 3 milliwatts - 1971 (A Standard Flashlight uses about 200milliwatts)
1st Place Field Day 1984 - QRP classification
Millenium Award - QST Magazine - Worked 100 countries in 2-weeks running 5 watts (Award dated 15Jan2000).
Worked All Continents in 42 minutes in 1971 CQ WW DX Contest running under 7 watts input, 4.8 watts output..
I offer a "QRPp - 300 Award" as shown below published in QST
